Never did I know that castor oil even existed until one day when my friend told me that she had been using this oil for last few months and it had brought good improvement in her hair health. This happened 5-6 years ago and after that, I did an extensive search, from time to time, on the amazing benefits of castor oil for skin and hair. Also called ‘Arandi tel’ in hindi, castor oil has been in use for decades for ailments. In Ayurveda, among other uses, one of its uses is to detoxify the body. It is also used in many medicines for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Nowadays, it is also used in various cosmetics, bath & body products for its numerous benefits for skin & hair.
Benefits of castor oil for skin
Helps in preventing stretch marks– Castor oil is high viscosity oil. It has a thick consistency which keeps the skin hydrated for long hours. Oils like this are highly recommended for pregnant women as their skin stretches to accommodate the growing baby and can become a canvas of zig-zag stretch marks. If applied daily, after the shower, castor oil can keep the skin moisturized and increase its elasticity. This will make the skin ready for stretching and prevent the occurrence of stretch marks.
Defers ageing- You do not need to invest huge bucks in anti-ageing products when you have castor oil to use. It slows down ageing and also helps in breaking scar tissue. Since the viscosity is high, the best time to apply this oil on the skin is before going to bed. Don’t put off by the thickness of the oil. It will automatically spread onto the skin because of the natural heat generated by the body.
Moisturizes skin- Castor oil is very moisturizing, and that makes it a great oil for the cold season. It can soften dry skin, reduce flakiness and clear rough spots. Using castor oil on a daily basis before going to bed can be helpful in the winter months when skin is at its driest. The regular application of castor oil will take off the dullness, and make the skin soft, supple and smooth.
Thickens eyebrows & lashes- Castor oil stimulates the growth of hair. If rubbed into the eyebrows each night castor oil can thicken the eyebrows and make them look really full. With the help of an ear bud carefully apply castor oil on the lashes and soon you will see long and thicken lashes. Make sure that you take very less quantity of castor oil so that it does not go into your eyes.
Heals inflammation- The anti-inflammatory property of castor oil makes it the first choice when it comes to skin inflammation. When you suffer from a sunburn or redness from a painful zit, apply castor oil on the affected area and you will see relief in an hour or so.
Benefits of castor oil for hair
Reduces hair fall- Castor oil makes the hair strong and healthy. A few months ago I share a concoction of castor oil, clarified butter (desi ghee) & coconut oil that helps in reducing hair fall. I have been applying this oil mixture for years and my hair does not fall suffer from severe fall now. Though there are some hair breakages once a while but that is acceptable.
Promotes hair growth- Castor oil hair stimulates hair growth by boosting blood circulation to hair follicles. Since the oil is quite thick you might need to shampoo the hair twice but the outcome is worth investing the time and effort. The regular massage of castor oil also helps in treating dry and damaged hair.
Treats dandruff & hydrates the scalp- Castor oil also has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. If massaged onto the scalp it will help to clear up dandruff and other scalp conditions such as itchiness. Also, being of high viscosity castor oil is moisturizing and keeps the scalp hydrated. This prevents the scalp from getting flaky. Not only for treatment but if you used regularly, castor oil will stop the conditions from surfacing in the first place.
