Raisins might look very bland and unattractive but these wrinkled looking nuts have tremendous health and beauty benefits. Now, you must be wondering why the title of this post focuses on eating soaked raisins. Well, like all other dry fruits, raisins also produce heat in the body. If your body can withstand the heat you can consume raisins in the dry form. On the other side, if you are intolerant of the excessive heat produced in the body by dry fruits then you should be eating them after overnight soaking. Raisins are also called ‘Kishmish’ in Hindi and ‘Saungi’ in Punjabi, and they make an absolutely nutritious ingredient in all types of sweet cuisines. In India, even the salty cuisines are garnished with raisins. In curries such as ‘malai kofta’ and ‘shahi paneer’, the presence of raisins raises the flavor a few notches up. Enough of the mouth-watering dishes, now I am going to focus just on the health and beauty benefits of eating soaked raisins. As I have said earlier you can eat them in dry form as well but you will get significant benefits only if you eat them on empty stomach.
How to soak raisins in water:
Take a deep bowl and fill it with regular or filtered water that is at room temperature. Now, take 10-12 raisins, put them in the bowl and cover the bowl with a lid. Let the raisins soak overnight. Next morning, take them out of the water and eat empty stomach. The number of raisins depends on your digestive ability. I eat 10-12 of them every morning. You too can start with that number and gradually increase or decrease the quantity depending on how your body responds. Now, let’s see the health benefits of eating raisins.
Health Benefits of Raisins
Cure anemia: Raisins might look small in size but they are a power-packed source of nutrients. When grapes are dried to produce raisins, the nutrients become more concentrated and thus make raisins a rich source of energy, Vitamins A & B, Iron, and potassium. If a person is suffering from anemia (less HB), the consumption of a handful of raisins can help in curing the disease and elevating the HB levels.
Help in digestion: Being the dried version of grapes, Raisins are rich in fiber. Fiber helps in keeping the bowel movement regular and also acts as a laxative because it swells in the presence of liquids. People who suffer from chronic constipation or piles are suggested to eat soaked raisins every morning as that aids in clearing the stomach.
Help in fitness: As said earlier raisins contain concentrated nutrients, which are an immense source of energy and keep the stomach full for long hours. Whenever you feel starving consume a handful of raisins instead of junk food. That ways you will not have to regret of your food choices as you will give something healthy to your body and stay energetic for long hours.
Good for eyes: The presence of Vitamin A in raisins is beneficial for the eyes. They also contain a significant amount of beta-carotene and polyphenolic phytonutrients that protect the eyes from damage and improves eyesight. The regular consumption of raisins also prevents age-related weakening of vision. Also, these vitamins keep the eye muscles strong and healthy and save the eyes from diseases like conjunctivitis.
Reduce acidity: The presence of gases in the respiratory system can give rise to heart disease, stones, and other harmful ailments. Raisins contain potassium and magnesium, which act as antacids and help in reducing acidity. This removes the toxins from the body and helps it in staying fit.
Beauty Benefits of Raisins
Clear & glowing skin: Being a rich source of antioxidants, raisins help to maintain clear and glowing skin. They purify the blood by removing toxicity and thus help in keeping the skin clear of acne and random breakouts.
Defer ageing: Raisins contain a wonder component- Resveratrol, which is a skin beneficial nutrient. It is a powerful antioxidant that slows down the ageing process by improving the formation of new skin cells and accelerating the skin’s self-repairing ability. The regular consumption of raisins also defers the first signs of ageing such as fine lines.
Skin hydration: Resveratrol and Vitamin A help fuel the formation of new skin cells. This improves the skin hydration, giving it a supple and healthy look. Also, the blood purifying property of raisins makes the skin radiant, plump, and beautiful.
Healthy & strong hair: The blood purifying property of raisins makes them a good contributor in improving hair health. Improved blood circulation leads to the growth of hair follicles that further makes the hair strong and hinders hair-fall.
Lustrous hair: There can be numerous reasons why hairs lose its shine and start looking lifeless. One of the main reasons is the deficiency of Iron. Raisins being a rich source of Iron refill this deficiency and provide the lost shine to dry manes. Eating raisins on regular basis leads to healthy, strong and shiny hair.
