Healthy and Strong Hair – How To Take Care of Your Hair
Hi Friends,
Are you suffering from any of these hair problems: hair fall, hair greying, rough hair, split ends, etc, etc.? If yes, then you do not need to worry about them much as some of these problems are cyclic in nature and need attention only when they cross a certain threshold.
Hair fall is a very common problem, and every other person you will talk over it would be going through this problem. Actually, hair fall is cyclic in nature i.e. it happens twice a year for a period of around 3 months each. After 3 months new hair root up and replace the fallen hair. This is a normal hair cycle, wherein once hair growth period is over the hair density returns to normal one. However, due to ageing there can be a difference in the hair density as hair roots start getting weaker and weaker. But with proper hair care regimen this problem can be tackled with and delayed for a couple of more years.
Just like you follow a strict skin care regimen you need to follow a more strict hair care regimen too. A little hard work should not be a problem – after all, nothing comes for free  . There are four C’s to have a healthy and strong hair that will eventually serve as a dry hair treatment at home Cleaning, Conditioning, Care and Consistency.
Cleaning – Keep your scalp clean – wash your scalp every alternate day with a mild shampoo. Some people think that washing hair daily makes it rough and dull. But if your hair get dirty that often then it’s always better to wash it daily with a very mild or baby shampoo. Also, ensure that while washing you massage your scalp gently using finger tips.
Hard water always causes damage to hair. If your taps are running hard water then it’s always preferable to put a spoon of lemon in last mug of water while rinsing off shampoo.
Clean your hair comb/brush every week. Do not wait to clean the comb until you forget the real color of the bristles :-) . Always use a wide toothed comb to avoid split-ends. Split ends, if formed, can retard hair growth. So to promote the growth it is vital to trim the hair after every 3-4 months.
Also, comb your hair at least twice a day and essentially before going to bed.
Keep your pillow covers clean. If possible, use satin pillow covers as that cause less hair breakage.
Conditioning – Do not to forget to condition your hair after shampooing. Conditioning provides nourishment to hair and helps boosting up hair health. It smooths down the cuticle layer of the hair, preventing any roughness that might arise after shampooing.
Conditioners are mainly of two types: external and internal. External conditioners are the everyday conditioners, which need to be applied along hair length avoiding hair root and scalp, and need to stay on for 5-7 minutes. Internal conditioners have to be applied on scalp and hair, and need to stay on for 15-20 minutes. These conditioners help improve the hair’s internal health.
One can also use deep conditioning hair marks on weekly or fortnightly basis.
Care – Proper care is required to make hair healthy and strong. It is not only external care but internal care as well. Whatever you eat reflects directly on your hair and skin. So, start munching on dark color vegetables and fruits, and include lots of proteins (eggs, fish, soya, paneer, lentils, etc.) in your diet. Most importantly keep your body hydrated- drink at least 3-4 liters of water every day.
Massage your scalp, with good oil, at least twice a week. You can use any regular hair oil: coconut, olive, mustard or almond that suits your hair and scalp. Keep the oil on overnight then wash it off the next morning. Oil massaging does not provide any extra benefit if kept for much longer so better to wash it off the next day. Regular oil massage moisturizes the scalp and increases blood circulation thereby promoting hair growth.
Physical exercise is another activator of strong and healthy hair. Routinely exercise leads to sweating, opens pores and makes hair breathe. Indulging in a rigorous exercise regimen for 3-4 days a week brings prominent results not only on the hair but also on the skin.
Stress is also one of the main causes of hair disorders. So try to relax and make yourself happy. Take out some time from your busy schedules to join the activities that make you cheerful. You can go for dance, yoga, instrumental music, painting, etc. – anything you enjoy and love. De-stressing is as important as eating so do some brainstorming and find sometime for happiness.
Consistency – Beautiful and healthy hair demand lots of patience and disciplined consistency. Be consistent in following a strict hair care routine. And, be patient to see the difference in hair health. Do not just give up after 2-3 weeks; you will start seeing the results after 2-3 months only. Till then you need to take regular and devoted care of your hair to turn them into healthy and strong hair.
If you are committed to follow all these C’s then you will definitely be able to see an improvement in your hair health. As I have said, nothing comes for free. Spend some time with your hair and you will make it happy :-) .
Take care, have a healthy and strong hair day!
