People often misinterpret my blog’s niche to be related to weddings only. But its way beyond weddings, it is about taking care of you in such a way that you look and feel as awesome as a bride does. This includes everything right from diet, fitness, hygiene, makeup, skincare to fashion. Basically, I write about everything that makes a woman happy and healthy. In today’s post I am talking about Hypothyroidism, its symptoms and how to control Hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism soon after the delivery but I did not pay much attention to it until the symptoms got this sever. That’s how I felt motivated to search about it, treat it and share with you all. To start with let’s have a look at the typical definition of Hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism means under-active thyroid glands. It is a condition when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones to meet the needs of the body. It messes up with body’s metabolism and affects digestion among many other things. That’s why people with Hypothyroidism find it hard to lose weight. In addition to obesity, the other symptoms that might be due to thyroid malfunctioning are:
1) Fatigue
2) Weakness
3) Dry skin
4) Eyebrow thinning
5) Puffy face
6) Irregular menstrual periods
7) Weakened memory
The list might be even longer but these are the symptoms that I have personally experienced over a period of time. The most-severe of them was the eyebrow thinning. Only when my eyebrows were almost gone I paid attention to my body needs. I consulted a doctor and got the thyroid test done. As suspected, I had an under-active thyroid gland and since I was not taking any medications, doing physical workout or improving diet it got to a level where my body had to shout out loud enough for me to notice.
After the diagnosis, I started thyroid medication that has to be taken every morning on an empty stomach. The potency of these tiny tablets varies depending on level of malfunctioning of thyroid glands. Usually, if diagnosed early you start with 25 mcg pills but then again it depends on your body and other symptoms as well. Always consult a doctor before starting these pills.
Regular exercise plays another vital role in Hypothyroidism management plan. Even a simple workout like brisk walking helps people suffering from Hyperthyroidism to boost metabolism and lose weight in addition to controlling other symptoms. If brisk walking is not your thing start slowly with stretching and weight-bearing exercises, and then increase the activity level as the tolerance grows. Be mindful that regular physical exercises can help alleviate the symptoms but still you might have to be on medication to properly control thyroid functioning.
The other lifestyle change that I needed to make was diet management. Hey, I did not stop eating but included/excluded certain foods that control Hypothyroidism. The inclusion is mainly to increase the intake of Iodine and Selenium.
a) Since lack of Iodine is the main culprit for this condition so I replaced regular salt with Iodine rich salt. It is readily available at all grocery stores so just look for the Iodine label before you add salt to the cart. You can also include Iodine rich foods like seaweed, fish, dairy and eggs.
b) Selenium is another ingredient that helps the body to activate thyroid hormones. It is found in nuts, pulses, cottage cheese, brown rice, mushrooms, spinach, cashews, bananas, milk and yogurt. If you are non-vegetarian, you have even more options like chicken, turkey and beef.
For the exclusion part, I avoided eating:
a) Gluten rich food such as bread, cakes, pasta, etc.
b) The extremely nutrient rich vegetables such as broccoli and kale.
c) Ideally should have given up on coffee and green tea too but as I find myself too much addictive to these two drinks so I reduced the intake but did not completely cut them off.
So that was my journey of diagnosing with Hypothyroidism, creating a management plan and sticking to the plan to reap good results. Hope you will find it beneficial.
