Reader Query: How to get rid of dandruff using home remedies?
Hi Everyone,
Often our scalp gets attacked by the most common dandruff problem. Though several causes such as seasonal change, nutrient deficiency and improper care attribute to the flaky scalp problem, yet some remedies, if used consistently, can help in getting rid of it. I am no follower of chemically laced products; rather I prefer to stick to the primitive homemade remedies to take care of hair and skin. Chemicals can often back fire resulting in aggravating the situation than proving reprieve. Here are a couple of remedies that I have learnt from my Mom to treat dandruff, and I hope you too will benefit from them.
Hot Oil Therapy
This therapy works wonder in nourishing flaky scalp. Take a pan, fill it half with water and keep it on the gas until the water reaches boiling point. Now, take some hair massage oil in a small steel bowl, I usually go with mustard oil but you can go with coconut oil as well, and put it in the pan. Use finger tips to massage your scalp with hot oil in circular motions. Keep doing until you cover every inch of the thirsty scalp, once done slather the hair strands from roots till ends. To maximize the benefits, after the massage is done you can cover your scalp and hair with a hot towel. Doing so opens up the pores and let the oil penetrates into the scalp. Repeat this process with or without hot towel every alternate day.
Vinegar Magic
Apple cider or white vinegar can be used to address the dandruff problem. I know, because of the foul smell it sounds like a dreadful idea but surely vinegar when acts as an anti-dandruff element it just shoos away flakiness, over a period of time. Moreover, applying vinegar is the easiest remedy and least time consuming. Depending upon your hair length, take equal proportions of vinegar and warm water. Mix them well. Pour the concoction over your hair, and massage for a couple of minutes before rinsing it with water. Ensure that you wait for 5-6 hours before actually shampooing the hair. Repeat this process once or twice a week, and you will see the magic. It does not only help in treating scalp flakiness, but also adds shine to hair. Because of the awful smell, I would recommend to use this treatment on weekends or holidays.
Fenugreek seeds
Fenugreek seed is the most common spice that can be found in Indian households. Being rich in proteins and amino acids, it is usually added to food. However, people are also cognizant about its application benefits on hair and apply them often to improve hair health. The treatment involves soaking 2 heap full spoons of fenugreek seeds overnight. Next day, drain the water out and grind the seeds to make a smooth paste. Apply this paste on the scalp, and let it stay on for about an hour before shampooing. Follow this treatment once a week and you will notice considerable improvement in hair health and dandruff.
Lemons
If fungus is the cause of dandruff then there is a high probability that it can be treated using freshly squeezed lemon juice. The acid content present in lemons can collapse fungus, which is often the reason of dandruff. This is a two phase process, in phase 1: take some lemon juice and apply it on your scalp. Leave it on for 5 minutes. In phase 2: take 1 teaspoon lemon juice and add it to the water while your rinse the hair. Do not shampoo them immediately; rather I would say you should shampoo your hair the next day.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is another plant that is believed to treat dandruff and provide nourishment. Take fresh Aloe Vera pulp and massage your scalp with it. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing it with plain water. The trick here is to apply the gel on damp here, after you have shampooed them. You can follow this treatment every time you have a head bath. Even when you got relief from dandruff, sticking to this routine will tame the frizziness and make your hair healthier.
Dandruff or no dandruff, I always follow these remedies to take good care of my hair. As they say “Better prevent and prepare than repent and repair”.
