What you eat affects the health and therefore look of your skin. It’s a fact proven by a multitude of studies (The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology). And one of the things that have the most negative effect on your looks is sugar (Huffington Post). Acne is a most common result of overindulgence in candy. Therefore, if you want to avoid breakouts and reduce the risk of a acne-scars, you should be controlling your sugar intake very tightly.
How Does Sugar Cause Acne (and Other Skin Problems)?
• Inflammation: As sugar has a high glycemic index, your body breaks it down into energy very fast. This is what causes a spike in blood glucose and inflammation. In response, your body produces more insulin to counter glucose. This exacerbates inflammation and can cause an acne breakout. These spikes also enhance sebum production, which clogs your pores and makes the acne worse.
• Glycation: Glycation is an oxidative process during which the enzymes that trigger inflammation attach themselves to collagen. As a result of this, collagen breaks down. This aggravates skin multiple inflammatory skin conditions, including acne and rosacea. But the main danger of this ‘sugary effect’ is that it speeds up aging and the appearance of wrinkles.
• Insulin resistance: Eating sugar makes your glucose spike, so your body must produce more insulin, which triggers the production of androgynous hormones that make your skin oily and trigger acne breakouts. Excessive body hair and dark spots on skin are also results of increased insulin production. As your body develops natural insulin resistance the more it produces, you literally make your case worse with every piece of sugar you consume.
Fight Against Acne: How to Stop Eating Sugar
Scientists are still arguing about whether there’s biological proof to support the theory that sugar is as addictive as cocaine (The Guardian). However, anyone who’s fond of candy knows that it sure seems so. Therefore, to ‘break up with sugar’ you should look into ways of how to control your appetite. And one of the most effective tricks there is to stay away from the things that you crave. Avoid the temptation every way you can.
Sadly, sugar cravings happen even when you aren’t looking at a store full of candy. But you can control those by tricking your body and feeding it much less harmful but sweet things. This means fruits, preferably fresh as dried fruits have a much higher sugar content. And if you eat dried fruits, avoid those dipped in syrup as they are as sugar-laden as regular candy.
If all fails, give in a tiny bit. You have to limit yourself to only a small piece of candy/cake/other sugary treat. Don’t make this indulgence regular and don’t make it a reward to yourself for something. However, when the craving gets too bad, don’t stress out your mind over it too much. The longer you stick to a healthy sugar-free diet, the fewer these episodes will be.
